Section 4 · When It Goes Wrong

Lesson 2 of 2

If Someone Goes Down

Protect the scene first, then call it in. These are the first few minutes, before anyone with real training arrives. Under stress, you remember the bold line, so learn those.

1. Stop safely and shield the scene

Park where you shield the scene without blocking the responders' way in. Hazards on. You are no use to anyone as the second casualty.

2. Send one person to call 911

Give them a road name, a junction, or a mile marker. Everyone assuming somebody else called is a real thing that happens, so point at one person and make it their job.

3. Stop serious bleeding with firm direct pressure

Blood loss is the thing most likely to be fixable on a roadside. Use a tourniquet only if you've been trained on one, and note the time you put it on. The dispatcher will talk you through what to do. Do what they tell you.

4. Leave the helmet on

It's holding the head and neck in line, and taking one off badly does real damage. Don't remove it unless it's the only way to give lifesaving care and you know how to do that safely. If you're not sure, you're not sure. Leave it and tell the dispatcher.

5. Do not move them

Unless they're in immediate danger from traffic or fire. Kneel where they can see you without turning their head.

6. Tell the medics what you saw

The speed, what they hit, whether they were knocked out, and for how long. You were there and they were not.

Put your details on your helmet

A D76 Emergency ID keeps your medical information and emergency contacts behind a transparent NFC sticker on your helmet, and you can print a QR code for it too, so responders can find them if you can't tell them yourself. Set it up at d76riders.com/settings/emergency. For what to do at a crash scene, see Emergency Response.

Ride smart today. Make it home tomorrow. Look out for each other. That's the D76 way.
